Ottawa Senators: Analyzing the Trade Candidates

Ottawa Senators

With a lot of rumors around Mark Stone and Matt Duchene‘s future I decided to put all the Ottawa Senators players in to 4 tiers.

Tier 1: Staying Put

I mean there is no way Ottawa trades some of their future pieces like the players below;

Thomas Chabot, D
Brady Tkachuk, LW

Chabot is currently in the Norris race and it’s only his 2nd season, so Pierre Dorion would be crazy to trade him. Brady was just drafted with the 4th pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. With Ottawa keeping that pick and risking the possibility of losing Jack Hughes, I don’t get why Brady would be traded.

Stats (as of the 18th of February 2019):
Chabot 50 GP, 11 G, 33 A, 44 PTS
Tkachuk 47 GP, 13 G, 14 A, 27 PTS

Tier 2: Traded for Upgrades

These players are most likely staying but could be traded if Ottawa obtains something much more important.

Ryan Dzingel, LW
Chris Tierney, C
Colin White, C
Maxime Lajoie, D
Drake Batherson, C
Rudolfs Balcers, LW
Alex Formenton, LW
Filip Gustavsson, G
Logan Brown, C
Josh Norris, C
Jacob Bernard-Docker, D
Jonny Tychonick, D
Joel Daccord, G
Filip Chaplik, C

All of these players have something in common; They are all young players who have an exciting future. A few of these could be in the staying put category. Dzingel and Tierney are great 2nd line players who are versatile. White, Lajoie, Batherson, Balcers are players who have gotten some NHL time this season and most likely will play a bigger role next season as Ottawa will most likely not improve enough. Formenton, Gustavsson, Brown, Norris, Bernard-Docker, Tychonick, Chaplik are going to also be big players for Ottawa in the future but since Ottawa has a bunch of these types of players a few of them will most likely be traded for a big star. Daccord is in a strange spot, he could be the future #1 but his age might stop him from becoming that. Daccord is already 22 years old so that might raise a few red flags for hockey fans. He does have great numbers though what make this situation so strange.

Tier 3: Expendable

I’m not going to list everyone just the notable ones.

Craig Anderson, G
Anders Nilsson, G
Mark Borowiecki, D
Dylan DeMelo, D
Mikkel Boedker, LW
Jean-Gabriel Pageau, C
Zack Smith, C

Most of the Ottawa team can go in the eyes of fans and the GM. Nilsson might be re-signed but it doesn’t really solidify him in the team. DeMelo and Boedker were acquired from San Jose in two separate trades. Pageau hasn’t hit the hype that he made when he scored 4 goals against the New York Rangers in the 2017 playoffs. Smith has been sent down to the AHL a few times during his few seasons. Borowiecki and Anderson are not wanted by any team and will most likely retire or play in Europe.

Tier 4: Definitely Traded

Cody Ceci, D
Matt Duchene, C
Bobby Ryan, RW
Mark Stone, RW

Ceci wanted 6 million last summer and if he still wants that, Dorion will walk out of the room. Ottawa has verbally said that Duchene is gone unless there is a last minute change. Ryan has been on the trade block for over a year now. Stone is most likely unhappy in Ottawa and will demand out.
